Week 28th August - September 1st

Maths

Decimals – adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing
This week we have been investigating many elements of decimals. We have added, subtracted and divided decimals, understanding that we need to keep the columns in a straight line as we complete the process. Multiplying decimals is different in that it is numbers AFTER the decimal point, which indicate the final answer.

We are also confident about the base number and exponent which is also connected to our place value information.
Please ask us to show you at home and we can explain fully as we teach you.

It is very very important that students know their times tables and we encourage them to practice at home each night until they are confident.

Writing
Students are trying to extend their writing skills by bringing in more adjectives and thinking about their questions. By encouraging students to ask more and more questions and gaining more insightful information, they should be able to put together a good narrative based around a migration story.

Reading
Students continue to read a wide variety of Migration stories both in class and for free reading. Looking at the stories, students are trying to make the connection to the lines of inquiry to deepen their understanding of the Central Idea.

UOI
Students have spent the week taking on the role of a person caught up in migration. With questioning and information they already know, they are trying to connect this to a line of inquiry looking at the perspective of different people within a migration situation. They have been interviewed by 'journalists' to try and deepen their understanding of why people migrate.

Preparing For The Assembly
Students have been divided into six groups and are responsible for putting together a short presentation which highlights what they have been learning about in their first few weeks in Grade 5. Come and watch them perform on Friday 8th September at 7.45am in the Black Box Theatre.

Do you have a MIGRATION STORY?

Do you have a MIGRATION STORY?

Please stay behind after the Grade 5 assembly FRIDAY 8th SEPTEMBER at 7.45am and share with small numbers of students, the reasons why you or a family member migrated. The students have inquired into this concept and would love to hear your stories.

Grade 5 Assembly - Friday September 8th Black Box Theatre

Please come and support your child as they present to you their Grade 5 assembly based around all the work they have been covering in class since the beginning of the year.

It will be at 7.45 am, so please come and join them in the Black Box Theatre

Week 21st August - 25th August

Maths
Place Value
This week we have been looking at place value and which place each number needs to go. Students are able to draw the columns of units, tens, hundreds, thousands and millions and write the numbers in different forms. Students know written, expanded, base 10 and standard form. They have looked at whole numbers and are beginning to work on decimal numbers.

It is very very important that students know their times tables and we encourage them to practice at home each night until they are confident.
Writing
Completing the narrative. Working with Ms Lynn, students have completed their narrative pieces of writing. They have edited their work and published their final copy.
We look forward to their writing continuing to develop throughout the year.
Reading
Students have read a wide variety of Migration stories both in class and for free reading. Looking at the stories, students are trying to make the connection to the lines of inquiry to deepen their understanding of the Central Idea.
UOI
Students have spent the week both in school and outside of school learning the techniques needed to conduct interview questions. With a variety of activities and looking at Brainpops, students have a wider experience of which questions make good interviews. They should have now interviewed at least 2 people from home finding out their migration story.

Approaches To Learning
Students brought in their own 'item' which could be looked at through the lens of an ISSUE. Ms Lou shared an example of a lycra sports top and how it could be used through the eight Key Concepts. Students completed their own ISSUE, using their item and looking at it through form, function, change, causation, connection, responsibility, reflection and perspective.

GRADE 5 CLASS ASSEMBLY

Grade 5 Assembly
Friday 8th September at 7.30am
Black Box Theatre

Please come and join us.

DO YOU HAVE A MIGRATION STORY?
The Grade 5 students would LOVE to hear about it.

We have started our new unit of inquiry looking at reasons why people migrate to different countries.
If you would like to share your story with the Grade 5 students, PLEASE email your child's class teacher. We would like to take time AFTER the assembly on Friday September 8th for you to join our students and share your story.
It would be a small number of students, listening and asking you questions about your Migration Story.

Week 2 August 14th - August 18th

Maths
Basic Operations
The week has been spent getting students back into addition, subtraction, long multiplication and division.
It is very very important that students know their times tables and we encourage them to practice at home each night until they are confident.

Writing
What an exciting week. Working alongside Ms Lynn, students have been writing some amazing pieces. Starting with an introduction that hooks their reader, including powerful adjectives, writing the problem and then completing their first writing sample in Grade 5, we are very impressed with this first attempt.
We look forward to their writing continuing to develop throughout the year.

UOI
A great start to our first unit of inquiry for Grade 5. We have looked at the transdisciplinary theme of Where We Are In Place and Time and from that have identified that we are looking at migration. We have looked at some reasons people migrate and students are looking at their own family members and friends to find out more information about why families move.

Approaches To Learning
We started with our first inquiry today which we will plan each Friday so that the students are ready for their Grade 5 PYP Exhibition in April. They now know the six transdisciplinary themes, the eight key concepts, the Learner Profiles and the Essential Elements. A great first lesson.

House Teams

In Assembly today, students learned about the new ISPP house system.

There are four House Teams and each student has been allocated a house (all members of a family will be in the same house).

These are the house names and colours:
Lotus

Bayon
Mekong

Kouprey

Today all students received their house T-shirt. This must only be worn for House events and not at other times.  (i.e. don’t wear them to school or for sports unless there is a ‘house’ event).

If students lose their house t-shirt they must contact the ES office to buy another one.

HOME LEARNING

Home Learning will start on Monday

Students will receive a Home Learning sheet of activities on the Grade 5 class Blog to complete throughout the week and return to their class teacher the following Monday. The idea is to help students manage their time when completing work at home.
It is suggested that students in Grade 5 spend approximately 50 minutes a night with Home Learning including reading every night.

Please feel free to contact your child's teacher if you have any concerns.

A Great First Week August 7th to August 11th

A great first week. Students have worked very hard throughout the first week back.

Introductions, welcomes, tower building, scavenger hunts, attributes, attitudes, library visits, Mathletic accounts, sample writing pieces, maths, palindromes.
