WEEK 11TH SEPTEMBER - 13TH SEPTEMBER

The Grade 5 teachers hope you are all having a great holiday and enjoying Pchum Ben

Summative Assessment
Students completed their summative assessment based around the information they had collected throughout this unit of inquiry on MIGRATION. Powerpoints, websites, leaflets, posters, booklets were some of the ways students presented their information which compared 2 migration stories. They reflected on their work, assessed themselves and were given the opportunity to assess another student's work, before their teacher completed the final part of the process. Well Done Grade 5 on a great first summative assessment.

Maths - Applying decimal skills to more challenging questions
Now that students have a good understanding of place value, and the four basic operations, they are now applying these skills to more challenging tasks.
It is still very important that students know their times tables as we move through these skills in Grade 5.

Tabloid Sports
GREAT FUN was had as students took place in 5 different activities out on the field. With many of the activities including water, it was wonderful to watch these Grade 5 students having so much fun together and cooperating with each other in their house teams.

WEEK 4TH SEPTEMBER - 8TH SEPTEMBER

Maths

Continuing With Decimals
 adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.
This week we have been continuing to inquire further into decimals. We have added, subtracted and divided decimals, understanding that we need to keep the columns in a straight line as we complete the process. Multiplying decimals is different in that it is numbers AFTER the decimal point, which indicate the final answer.
We are now applying this knowledge to more in depth questions about decimals.

It is very very important that students know their times tables and we encourage them to practice at home each night until they are confident.

Writing
Students continue to write with Ms Lynn and are completing their final narrative based around migration. They are applying the skills into their work and it is a joy watching them develop in this area of the curriculum.

Reading
Students continue to read a wide variety of Migration stories both in class and for free reading. Looking at the stories, students are trying to make the connection to the lines of inquiry to deepen their understanding of the Central Idea.

UOI
Students have spent the week making connections with the three lines of inquiry. Through a variety of written and reading activities they are continually making links between the key concepts, perspective, change and connection. They are producing work in their books, on large pieces of paper and digitally. This has been a great first unit of inquiry. Well done Grade 5. THANK YOU to all the parents who came in today and allowed the students to interview them.

 The Assembly
Congratulations on putting together the first Grade Assembly for this school year. There have been a number of feedback comments from teachers at how good you were. The Grade 5 teachers are very proud of what you achieved.

Wednesday 6 September 2017

Dear Parents,

  • Stay after the assembly to hear Mr Ben speak about the Angkor Wat trip which is coming up soon.

  • Do you have a MIGRATION STORY? Please stay behind after the Grade 5 assembly and share with small numbers of students, the reasons why you or a family member migrated. The students have inquired into this concept and would love to hear your stories.  This will be from 9:30am in the Grade 5 piazza.

  • Friday is a spirit day,  all students are required to wear their house t-shirt for the day.
